Lesson Level Selector
NEW! Check out our Lesson Selector to help guide which Level the swimmer should be in! This guide was created with the guidance of the American Red Cross Level descriptions and The Works WSI professionals. Please note that any registered participant may be assessed during their time in lessons and recommended to a different level based on the instructors observations. ALL SKILLS FOR EACH LEVEL MUST BE MET TO MOVE FORWARD. INSTRUCTORS WILL INDICATE THIS AFTER COMPLETION OF THE LEVEL. This tool is a created as a general guide to eliminate guessing at registration time. If you have questions, please reach out to our Aquatics Team. Click image below to download PDF.
GROUP LESSON CLASS DESCRIPTIONSWe suggest reaching out to a member of our Aquatics team before registration with any level-specific questions. Not all levels are offered every session.
AMERICAN RED CROSS SWIMMING LEVELS MARKED BELOW
Parent/Child (Red Cross Parent Child Level I )P/C familiarizes children between the ages of 6 months to 18 months with the water and teaches fundamental swimming skill by incorporating water activities. This level will provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water.
Water Drop/Parent (Red Cross PC Level 2)WD/P is an introduction to Preschool Level I. It is for children between the ages of 18 months to 3 years old or for those fearful or not ready to be independent without an instructor. Accompanied by their parent, they continue to learn the skills introduced in the Parent/Child class while learning Preschool Level 1 skills and one on one instruction with the instructor. Water safety knowledge is part of this level.
Little Fish:In Little Fish, children ages 2-3 develop basic swimming skills such as reaching for submerged objects, kicking on front and back, supported floating, blowing bubbles, and getting their face wet. This class works to encourage more independence (no parents in the water) with an emphasis on safety. Bring your little fish in for this class that is boatloads of fun!
Preschool Level 1: Introduction to Water SkillsIn Preschool Level 1, children ages 3 to 4 learn to enter and exit the water using ladder, steps or side, to blow bubbles through mouth and nose, bob to open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. While learning front and back glides and float, recovery to vertical position and to roll from front to back and back to front, children begin to develop comfort in the water. Other skills include alternative and simultaneous leg actions and arm actions on front and back, treading water using arm and hand actions and combined arm and leg actions on front and back.
Preschool Level 2 / Ages 3 and 4Children learn to enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side, fully submerge and hold breath, bob, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Children learn front jellyfish and tuck floats, front and back glides and floats, how to recover to a vertical position, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, and how to roll from front to back and back to front.
Preschool Level 3 / Ages 3 and 4In Preschool Level 3, children refine skills from Preschool Level 2 with less instructor support. These skills include: floating for 15 seconds, treading water, recovering from a float to a vertical position, full submerging, and combined arm and leg action on front and back. Swimmers who are successful in Preschool Level 2 are recommended for this level.
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills / Ages 5 and upIn Level 1 children ages 5 and up learn to enter and exit the water using ladder, steps or side, to blow bubbles through mouth and nose, bob to open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. While learning front and back glides and floats, recovery to vertical position and to roll from front to back and back to front, children begin to develop comfort in the water. Other skills include alternative and simultaneous leg actions and arm actions on front and back, treading water using arm and hand actions and combined arm and leg actions on front and back.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic SkillsSuccess with fundamental aquatic skills begins in Level 2 as children learn to enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side, fully submerge and hold breath, bob, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Children learn front jellyfish and tuck floats, front and back glides and floats, how to recover to a vertical position, change direction of travel while swimming on front or back, and how to roll from front to back and back to front.
Level 3: Stroke DevelopmentBuilding on the skills introduced in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water, children learn to enter water by jumping from side, back float, survival float, and rotary breathing. Skills that will be introduced include; flutter scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front, front crawl, elementary backstroke and treading water.
Level 4: Stroke ImprovementThis is an advanced level with many skills to perfect. Most students may complete Level 4 several times before passing all the necessary skills. In this level participants develop confidence in the skills learned and improve other aquatic skills including; swimming under water, feet-first surface dives, survival swimming, front crawl and backstroke open turns, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, plus flutter and dolphin kicks on back. To advance, participants must also be able to tread water using 2 different kicks.
Level 5: Stroke RefinementChildren learn further coordination and refinement of strokes in Level 5. We’ll cover tuck and pike surface dives while submerging completely, front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly and sculling.
Level 5/6:Swimmers develop further coordination and refinement of strokes in Level 5/6. Some new skills include surface dives and flip turns. Strokes to be reviewed are front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. Distance swimming and advanced safety topics are also learned in Level 5/6. Swimmers will practice survival floats and jumping into deep water.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill ProficiencyIn this level, students refine the strokes to swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Students learn to swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke. The class includes more complex safety skills, jumping into deep water and performing a survival float for 5 minutes, rolling onto back and performing a back float for 5 minutes, performing a surface dive retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool at a depth of 7-10 feet, returning to the surface and the starting point.
Adult Learn to SwimThis program is for adults who would like to learn to swim and/or are ready to be introduced to stroke development in a safe, comfortable environment amongst peers.
