Member Policies / Rules
- All members and guests must check in at the Welcome Center either through our full service or self service gate. Membership cards are required to enter the club and must be scanned with each visit. Our staff will ask you for your picture, this ensures you and all other members that all members are completely verified when they enter the center.
- Lost membership cards may be replaced for FREE at our Welcome Center/Guest Services.
- Membership dues cover general admission and certain classes offered at The Works.
- However, membership dues do not include certain services such as personal nutrition evaluations, personal training sessions, refreshments and specialized programs.
- Appointments with Fitness Trainers must be scheduled in advance. To schedule an appointment, please contact the fitness desk. Appointments will not be held past 15 minutes from your scheduled time.
- The Works requests that all members and guests obey a general code of proper conduct that respects the rights of others to enjoy our facilities. These rights include but are not limited to health, safety, and privacy.
- The Works does not permit disrupting or interfering with the workout of another member. All members and guests must respect the rights of others with courteous and appropriate behavior. The use of foul language is strictly prohibited.
- To ensure the privacy and safety of all members, cameras or photos of any kind are not allowed in any locker room.
- Photography or videotaping other members/guests anywhere in the club, without their permission, is strictly prohibited. Be courteous & respectful of other members' privacy.
- Tobacco, food, chewing gum and cans are not allowed in the exercise areas of the facility. Plastic water bottles are acceptable. Spills must be cleaned up by the member or guest immediately.
- Glass bottles of any kind prohibited in and on facility grounds.
- Alcohol, drugs, and banned substances are not allowed in The Works facility.
- Weapons of any type (firearms, ammunition, knives, or any instrument or device used for fighting, attack or defense) are not allowed on the property or in the facility.
- No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the premises.
- Smoking of any type is not permitted in The Works facility and on the grounds.
- All Works members and guests are expected to use their best efforts to care for the equipment and facilities.
- All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult 18+ at all times.
- The Works reserves the right to revoke any membership at any time for conduct contrary to the best interest of the center and its members. Upon revocation, The Works will refund any unused portion of dues previously paid.
- Any complaints regarding the conduct of The Works staff or of a member or guest should be reported directly to The Works management in writing.
- Parking is available for members and guests in specially designated areas. The Works has recently increased the number of existing spaces. We are also very proud of our eco-friendly porous pavement parking lot, one of the largest in New England. Parking during the hours of 6am-6pm, Monday-Friday in front of the gymnasium is reserved for our Early Learning Center (Pre School and Kindergarten). Violators will be towed.
- The Member Health Questionnaire must be filled out and signed by all members at the time of joining Any "YES" responses to the Member Health Questionnaire will require a signed medical waiver from a physician.
- All members and guests must sign an Assumption of Risk, Waiver, and Release from Liability form that releases Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and The Works of all responsibility for injuries you may incur while exercising in the facility.
- It is strongly recommended that you receive permission from your physician before beginning any exercise program.
- Exercise may be strenuous, and you are advised to exercise at your own risk. Always exercise at your own level and pace.
- At any time The Works reserves the right to obtain medical clearance if it is believed that a member or a guest may be in danger due to excessive exercise.
- Each member is responsible for informing The Works staff of any change in health or medical status during the membership term.
- In the event you begin to experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness/numbness or other symptoms, stop exercising and immediately inform The Works staff.
- Report any facility-related injury to The Works staff as soon as possible.
- If you should ever need to cancel your membership at The Works your resignation request must be received by the 15th of the month in order to not be charged for the following month. Members wishing to cancel their membership may cancel in person, through email or by mailing their written notice to the center. Telephone correspondence does not qualify.
- Resignation from the center shall not relieve the member of the responsibility to pay all charges and fines incurred during the duration of membership.
- We encourage our members to bring guests as often as they wish. Guest fees are available at our Welcome Center/Guest Services and our website.
- All guests under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 18+ at all times.
- All guests must report to the Welcome Center to buy a guest pass and check in as a guest.
- All guests must fill out and sign our Liability Waiver.
- All guests are expected to comply with and are subject to the same rules and regulations as Works members. Unless you are coming in to watch a swim lesson or other program your child or grandchild may be in, you must buy a guest pass while supervising a child using the pool or other area of the facility.
- Groups of all sizes are also welcome to use the facility. You may be asked to sign individual waivers or group waivers depending on the size of your group when entering the club.
- The Works is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. Valuables should be secured in lockers. Please bring your own lock (or purchase one from our Welcome Center) and remove it at the end of your workout. No bags, coats or personal items are allowed in the fitness areas.
- When using the exercise equipment, members and guests must wear proper training attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes at all times. Open toed shoes (sandals) and outside footwear are not permitted.
- Bare feet are not allowed outside of locker rooms or pool areas.
- Proper personal hygiene must be maintained by showering regularly, wearing clean clothing and using deodorant.
- Please refrain from using perfumes, fragrant lotions or colognes as they may be offensive to others.
- Limit use of Cellphone while on exercise equipment, the text can wait
- Wipe machines down after each use, we share equipment, not sweat
- Put weights away after each use, consider it another exercise
- Do not drop or slam weights, if you can pick it up, you can put it down
- Be friendly, allow others to "work-in"
- Please wear inside shoes to use our equipment and/or studios
- Sign up for all classes (this is also how we can contact you should we have to cancel a class). Remove your name if you are unable to make it. Share the Love
- No running on pool deck, the deck is not a slip n slide
- Shower before Swimming, we all share the pool
- Please don't sit naked on the Steam/Sauna Room bench. A towel or shorts is preferred.
- Please towel off at the shower, not in front of your locker.
- No shaving in the steam room or sauna.
- Please close your locker door when done.
- No sleeping, laying down, or feet on the furniture in the Member Lounge.
- No changing clothes in the lounge.
- Children must be attended.
- Please leave bags on the floor not the chairs.
- No bouncing basketballs except in the gym.
- The Works facilities and services are intended for the enjoyment of its members and guests. The Works facilities may not be utilized to promote special interests or requests without the permission of The Works Management
- All members and guests may use a locker based on availability.
- Men's & Women's Adult locker rooms on the second floor are for our members and guests 18+.
- The Family locker rooms on the first floor can be used for children of the opposite sex up until the age of 4. If you have a child over 4 of the opposite sex, you may use one of our 4 individual changing rooms near the Family Aquatic Center.
- All property must be removed from lockers immediately following workouts.
- Lockers shall not be used to store any property.
- The Works offers rental lockers in various parts of the facility for your convenience. Rental fees are available at our Welcome Center.
- Changing into exercise attire must be performed in the locker/shower room.
- No photography of any kind is permitted
Family Aquatic Center
- Shower before entering the pools or spa
- Patrons with communicable diseases are not allowed in the pool
- Do not swim if you are sick or have had diarrhea in the last 14 days
- Children 3 and under must wear a swim diaper at all times both in and around the pool
- Any child wearing a foam or approved floatation device must be accompanied by an adult and within arm's reach at all times
- Lifeguards, when on duty, are in charge of the pool and the safety of our members and guests
- No diving. Feet first jumping only, no flips or twists when jumping
- No running or running jumps,
- Pool Deck may be slippery when wet
- No food or drinks, other than water, in this area
- No glass containers on pool deck
- No breath holding or Prolonged underwater swimming
- No spitting, spouting water, blowing nose, or discharging any bodily fluids
- No horseplay: pushing, shoving, riding on shoulders
- No inflatable floatation devices of any type are allowed
- No boogie boards, connected flippers, or mermaid tails
- No outside items/toys can be brought in the pool. Only approved water toys provided by the works can be used.
- Slide hours are subject to change without notice. See website for details.
- You must be a minimum of 50" tall for the indoor slide or pass a swim test.
- Swim test may be administered by an on duty lifeguard, at the discretion of the guard.
- Bracelets must be worn for swimmers that do not meet the height requirement but have passed the swim test. (Available from an aquatics staff member.)
- No goggles worn while using the slide.
- Riders must enter in a seated, feet first position.
- State law requires everyone to shower before entering the pool.
- Any person having an infectious or communicable disease is prohibited from using a public pool. Persons having open blisters, cuts, etc. are advised not to use the pool.
- Patrons shall not spit or discharge any bodily fluids into the pool
- This is a lap pool only. All recreational swimming is to be conducted in our Family Aquatic Centers.
- Any child under the age of 14 must be under direct supervision of an adult (18 years) at all times. Lap pool swimmers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult for the purpose of swimming laps.
- Lane availability may be subject to change. The Works programming takes precedence.
- No food or drinks are allowed except water.
- No glass around pool area.
- No diving.
- No running or running jumps.
- No inflatable floatation devices.
- Bathers shall take a cleansing shower before entering the spa. Bathers shall not use body oils or lotions.
- Spa is for ages 16+ only. Patrons shall not use a public spa alone unless permitted by the pool operator or owner.
- Limit use to 10 minutes at one time. Wait at least 10 minutes after exercise before entering.
- Patrons shall not use a public spa if under the influence of alcohol, anticoagulants, antihistamines, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, stimulants, hypnotics, narcotics, or tranquilizers.
- Any person having an infectious or communicable disease is prohibited from using a public spa. Persons having open blisters, cuts, etc. Are advised not to use the spa.
- Patrons who are elderly, pregnant, or suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or high or low blood pressure shall not use a public spa without obtaining permission from their physician.
- Exposure to high temperatures for an extended period of time can result in heat exhaustion, heatstroke, heart attack, and, on occasion, death.
- Patrons shall not spit or discharge any bodily fluids into the spa
- No food or beverages are allowed except water.
- No glass around spa area.
- Please note: deck may be slippery when wet. All other pool rules apply.
- No lifeguard on duty. Enter at your own risk.
- Shower before entering the pools or spa.
- Patrons with communicable diseases are not allowed in the pool.
- Do not swim if you are sick or have had diarrhea in the last 14 days.

- Please return outdoor furniture if moved.
Fitness Floor
- Observe weight room etiquette and demonstrate courtesy towards others in the room at all times.
- Utilize spotters when appropriate.
- Members must use safety bars when using the squat racks, leg sled and Smith machine. Set the safety bars about one inch lower than your lowest movement with the bar.
- Dumbbells and weight plates must not be dropped on the floor.
- Weight plates are not to be leaned against equipment and machines.
- Collars are to be used at all times to secure weights on bars.
- After utilizing equipment, bars must be stripped, and plates and dumbbells returned to proper storage areas.
- Please use only one piece of equipment at a time, and take turns with others.
- It is the responsibility of each member and guest to wipe down the equipment with a disinfectant wipe that The Works provides throughout the exercise areas in the facility after use.
- The time limit for cardio equipment during busy periods is limited to 30 minutes per machine. If no one is waiting, you may continue to use the equipment.
- Please also be considerate when informing a fellow exerciser that you are patiently waiting for their machine. Ask them how long they have to complete their session.
- Please reset all cardio machines for the next member.
- Members and guests should report all equipment malfunctions and specific concerns immediately to The Works staff.
- All members must be accompanied by a Personal Trainer to utilize the Training Academy.
- Must be 14 to attend group exercise classes.
- Please follow the specific guidelines set forth for each class.
- Please refrain from outside conversations during class as it is distracting for fellow class members and your instructor.
- A proper warm-up is essential for avoiding injuries. Therefore, no one will be permitted to enter a class if more than 10 minutes late.
- A proper cool-down and stretch is also important after working out. If you need to leave early, please inform your instructor and allow yourself an extra 5 minutes to cool down properly.
- All fitness equipment used during the class must be wiped down and put away.
- Sign up required for ALL group fitness classes. This not only secures your spot as classes numbers continue to rise. This will ensure that you receive and email should a class be canceled due to inclement weather, sick instructor etc.
- Please help us keep our studio floors and equipment clean. Please bring an "indoor'' only pair of shoes to wear throughout the facility.
- Please arrive early prior to class to have time to put winter coats, boots, etc in the locker room. Please avoid putting these items outside of our studio to help us reduce congestion.
Gymnasium
- The Gymnasium is intended to be used for multiple activities. Please be certain to check the gym schedule for availability.
- Courts are available according to posted gym schedule. Works programs take precedence.
- Children under age 14 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult on the floor.
- Proper athletic attire, non-marking athletic shoes and shirts must be worn.
- No food or drink allowed except water in a closed-lid container.
- Secure your personal belongings and gym bags in a locker.
- Be Respectful. Absolutely no profanity, fighting, excessive yelling, spitting, unnecessary aggressiveness, and unsportsmanlike conduct.
- Be respectful of equipment and facility. No kicking, sitting on or inappropriate use of the equipment or balls.
- No dunking or grabbing onto the rims or nets. Keep balls away from the windows, ceiling, lights, and walls.
- Members of all ages* and skill levels can share the space.
- Report all injuries to the Welcome Center.
- Return Works basketballs to the Welcome Center or basketball cart if available.
- The Works reserves the right to ask anyone to leave if not adhering to the posted rules. Disciplinary action may be taken.*Under 14 must be supervised by an adult
- During Open Play the expectation is that rotational play will occur when necessary. If you want to play with certain people and certain people only, please make reservations during our reservation blocks.
- Pickleball paddles and balls are available (while supplies last) to loan at the Welcome Center.
- Community - $10/per person. Must be registered in Reservation Play. *If community member wants to attend open play days it is a regular guest pass fee*
- *Programs may take precedence.
- Court reservations are preferred and can be made in the member portal or at the welcome center.
- Enter portal and click "reservations"
- Select "tennis" then reserve your court!
- Please note: if you are unable to make your
- Reservation, please cancel it asap.
- Walk-ons are permitted as courts are available.
- Tennis shoes are required.
- All players are required to be courteous and respectful of others.
- Har-tru clay court care:
- Please fill any divots
- Sweep entire area with pull brooms
- Line the court after play
- Remove all belongings and trash
- All food is prohibited. Water in a closed container is allowed.
- No diapering. If a child needs to be changed a parent is responsible for removing the child from the program room to use the bathroom.
- Children will be dismissed from the program if they display any symptoms of a cough, sore throat, fever, or runny nose.
- All appointments by reservations only up to 48 hours in advance
- No walk-ins will be accepted
- Guardians must remain on site at all times child/ren are present in programming.
- Staff reserve the right to dismiss children from the program for behavioral reasons.
- The Outdoor basketball court is intended to be used for multiple activities. Please be certain to check the schedule for availability.
- Courts are available according to posted gym schedule. Works programs take precedence.
- Children under age 14 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult outside on the court.
- Proper athletic attire, non-marking athletic shoes and shirts must be worn on outdoor courts.
- No food or drink allowed except water in a closed-lid container.
- Be Respectful. Absolutely no profanity, fighting, excessive yelling, spitting, unnecessary aggressiveness, and unsportsmanlike conduct.
- Be respectful of equipment. No kicking, sitting on or inappropriate use of the equipment or balls.
